Whether I am home or away, my pre-bed self-care routine always includes a lip mask—or at the very least, an intensely moisturizing lip balm. That’s because, no matter what season it is, my lips are prone to dryness and dehydration overnight. So, layering on a lip treatment to help prevent chapping, cracking, and flaking has become part of my regular nighttime skincare routine every night of the year. Over the years, I’ve tried lip masks, balms, and treatments from drugstore bargains to luxurious splurges—all to mediocre results. So I was excited to finally get my hands on the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask, courtesy of the brand, one of the buzziest overnight lip masks on the market (and a celebrity favorite!).

The mask promises to “hydrate, nourish, and soften” and “leave lips visibly smooth.” After using it each night over two months, these are my thoughts.
Ingredients
The lip mask is made with tried-and-true skin-moisturizing ingredients, including emollients like coconut oil to nourish. It contains large quantities of occlusive ingredients such as shea butter and plant-derived and synthetic waxes, which form a barrier on thin lip skin to seal in hydration and prevent moisture loss.
I tested the mask in Vanilla, which is translucent in color and lightly scented, but the formula comes in five additional options, which all feature the corresponding flavor and a sheer finish: Berry, Peach Iced Tea, Gummy Bear, Sweet Candy and Grapefruit.
How I tested
I kept the lip mask on my bedside table and smoothed it all over my lips when I got into bed each night as the final step in my skincare routine. The mask comes with a small spatula to scoop out the product, if you prefer to use that instead of your fingers. I would sometimes reapply it if I woke up in the night and noticed the formula had been completely absorbed. In total, I used the lip mask for more than two months to gauge both immediate and long-term effects.
Texture and application
Because of its nourishing formula, the mask felt rich and slick going on; just one layer fully coated my lips easily. I liked that it wasn’t goopy or sticky, though, so it never transferred onto my pillows (or anything else) while I slept. It has a moderately shiny finish that looks flattering and could easily be worn during the day either alone or on top of a lip color.
What I liked (and didn’t)
For someone with perpetually chapped lips (and used to reapplying moisturizer regularly), I really enjoyed that only one slick of this mask made my lips feel silky and plush, and immediately relieved any dryness. The formula created a cushiony coating on my lip skin that made it feel protected. My lips also instantly appeared glowy, healthier and even a bit fuller. Most mornings when I woke up, my lips were soft instead of dehydrated, but on the coldest of the winter months, I did wake up with some flaking and had to reapply in the middle of the night.
I haven’t noticed that my lips are less dry in general over the long-term, but like many skincare products, overnight lip masks need to be applied (and reapplied) consistently to keep seeing results. One big plus is that the pot includes a large amount of product—even after using it for two months, I barely made a dent in it.
One last thing...
Overall, the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask is a solid choice for keeping your lips from feeling dehydrated overnight. I not only enjoyed the scent, texture, and glossy appearance, but it did smooth and protect my lips for hours at a time. That said, those with extremely chapped lips might benefit from a heavier duty protective layer overnight, especially during the dry winter months.
